PETALING JAYA: Incorrect policies caused issues on the local chicken supply, says former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who went on to say that he warned the Perikatan Nasional government about the issue over a year ago.

Najib said he pointed this out in an April 2021 Facebook posting, after noticing that Perikatan’s price control mechanism on chicken sales had set a lower price compared to then market prices.

“It did not take into account the cost of feed and fuel that has gone up during then,” he said in a Facebook posting on Thursday (June 2).

Najib said from April 2021, the price control mechanism was imposed on chicken and eggs.

“This did not solve the basic question that wasn’t even answered by the government or Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) ministers.

“‘Who wants to continue selling things if they are forced to sell at a lost?'”

As a result, Najib said many farmers and breeders were forced to reduce production or simply wind up operations.

In a sarcastic tone, Najib said after several months of implementing the price control mechanism, the government and Bersatu ministers finally decided to give a 60 sen subsidy to breeders.

“But, the payment is too slow and many breeders have complained.

“Who was slow – the finance ministry or the agriculture and foods industries ministry?” questioned the Pekan MP.

The shrinking chicken production since April last year, had led to Putrajaya’s decision to give up on subsidies and stop the price control mechanism.

“This is what happens if we are stubborn and continue implementing nonsensical policies,” added Najib.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the ceiling price for chicken and eggs, which was supposed to end on June 5, had been extended until the end of the month.

The ceiling price for standard chicken is set at RM8.90 per kg beginning Feb 5.

The price for a whole super chicken is RM9.90 per kg, while ceiling prices for grade A eggs are set at 43 sen per egg, grade B eggs at 41 sen per egg while grade C is 39 sen per egg.
