PETALING JAYA: It was a day of contrasting fortunes for two Weis in the Italian International Challenge.
Yesterday, Goh Jin Wei marched into the women’s singles semi-finals but Cheam June Wei went down in the men’s singles quarter-finals in Milan.
World No. 81 Jin Wei, who is on a mission to improve her world ranking so that she can play in bigger tiered tournaments, defeated Rachel Chan of Canada 21-18, 21-18 to set up a meeting with Hsu Wen-chi of Taiwan.
The duo have met once before during their junior days but the Taiwanese triumphed in the Singapore International Series.
World No. 72 June Wei, however, failed to live up to his standing when he went down 17-21, 10-21 to Christian Adinata of Indonesia. It’s June Wei’s first tournament since recovering from a back injury.
In the men’s doubles, Chia Weijie-Low Hang Yee kept their challenge alive after defeating Chen Zhi-ray-Lee Fang-jen of Taiwan 21-15, 21-18 in the quarter-finals.
They will play another Taiwanese pair Su Ching-heng-Ye Hong-wei next.
