KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan must hold its party polls this year as the Registrar of Societies (ROS) has rejected its application to delay it, says Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
The Warisan president said the party, during its general assembly last December, had decided to postpone its next annual general meeting and subsequently the party polls, which is due this year.
He said the decision to postpone the polls was made in order to strengthen the party and put its house in order following pressure from political rivals whom he claimed were attempting to poach their members.
“We just received a notification from the ROS on May 26 that our application has been rejected so we have to hold the AGM and party election this year.
“We will try to appeal the decision by ROS but in any case we are ready to implement our AGM and the election,” Shafie told reporters at the Warisan headquarters in Kolombong near here on Saturday (June 4).
He said the ROS did not give a reason for rejecting the application.
“There is no problem but what we want is consistency and fairness as ROS has shown leniency and approved similar applications from other parties,” he said, adding that Warisan would carry out the meeting and polls as required.
The former Sabah chief minister said they would start with branch meetings this month before moving on to divisional and the various party wings’ meetings in July.
“Hopefully, we can have our AGM and party election in early August,” he said.
Shafie also said every position is up for contest, including the presidency.
“We have a democratic system so there is no problem. Members can pick me if my leadership is still accepted but there are no restrictions … my deputy president (Datuk Darell Leiking) can contest the presidency if he wants,” he said.
Asked if the rush to hold party polls would disrupt Warisan’s preparations for a possible general election, he said any political party must follow the rules.
“We have to try our best. But this is not the first time we have gone through this (holding party polls at short notice) and I believe Warisan is still intact and united,” Shafie said.
