Daily consumption of these veggies may mitigate some of the negative health effects of smoking.
A new study has discovered which vegetables you should add to your shopping list if you smoke or reside in a smoky city like New Delhi.
According to researchers at the University of Delaware, eating vegetables such as celery, carrots, and parsley can help lessen the harmful health impacts of air pollution, which is a global health issue that causes millions of deaths each year. This study is also linked to the harm caused by smoking.
The researchers looked into how these specific veggies protect the body from acrolein build-up, which causes irritation to the lungs and skin, as well as a strong disagreeable odor that is poisonous to many tissues. Acrolein is found in considerable amounts in both cigarette smoke and vehicle emissions.
Researchers examined how efficiently these phytonutrient-rich veggies prevent acrolein toxicity in rats in a series of experimental tests. The findings suggest that vegetables can lower the oxidative pressure exerted by acrolein.
These veggies enable detoxification by enhancing the activity of the antioxidant enzyme, explains Dr. Gillian Trabulsi, citing research published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry. “The results suggest that these vegetables may provide protection against damage and inflammation caused by acrolein because in the liver the vegetables improve the conversion of acrolein to water-soluble acid which the body excretes.”
According to the researchers, people should consume between 1 and 1/3 cup per day, which is a manageable amount to consume throughout the day.
Even though these results are interesting, it’s important to remember that the research was only done on mice and that smoking is vile and bad for your health, and eating a few good vegetables won’t fix it. Therefore, quit smoking as soon as possible.
